Following the original MGP-1, developer MAKOTO INOMA has released the MGP-2 Makk Guitar Processor. Where most guitar apps focus on mimicking vintage tube amps and classic pedals, the MGP series takes a different position. Rather than recreating the past, MGP-2 is built for the modern DAW environment — “sculptural audio treatment” that reads more like high-end studio processing than a standard amp sim.
MGP-2 is a free download, letting you test the core engine before committing to the Pro features via subscription ($1.99 to $19.99).
The Philosophy: Beyond the Amp Sim
The core of MGP-2 is its approach to “cabinet” and “room” sound. Rather than fixed Impulse Responses that can feel static, MGP-2 uses two primary parameters to define your space:
- Size: Controls the simulated cabinet resonance and speaker density — from a tight, boxy practice amp sound to a wide, wall-shaking stack
- Distance: Adjusts the depth and air of the signal, simulating mic placement in 3D space without the phase issues that often show up in multi-mic IR setups
Pro Features & AUv3 Workflow
MGP-2 runs as an AUv3 plugin in AUM, Logic Pro for iPad, and Cubasis with every parameter exposed for automation.
- 11+ Integrated Effects: High-precision tuner, multi-stage gain/distortion, compressor, chorus, phaser, delay, and a high-quality spatial reverb
- Gain Stage System: The Pro version unlocks expanded gain stages (Lo/Normal/High), covering clean jazz tones through to crushing modern high-gain without losing clarity
- Stereo Sculpting: Dedicated Width and Pan controls place your guitar precisely in the stereo field — useful for double-tracking and wide atmospheric textures
- Universal Compatibility: Works across iPhone, iPad, and Mac — start a tone on your phone and continue the production in your desktop DAW
Key features:
- Digital-Native Cabinet Modeling: Size and Distance parameters replace fixed IRs for dynamic, phase-coherent spatial shaping
- 11+ Effects Chain: Tuner, compressor, multi-stage gain/distortion, chorus, phaser, delay, and spatial reverb
- Expanded Gain Stages (Pro): Lo/Normal/High modes from clean to high-gain
- Stereo Width and Pan: Precision stereo positioning within the AUv3 chain
- Full AUv3 Automation: Every parameter exposed to the host for automation and modulation
- Universal: iPhone, iPad, and Mac
App price: Free.
In-app purchases: Pro subscription — $1.99 to $19.99 (Unlocks expanded gain stages and full Pro feature set.)
