It’s finally here. Announced at NAMM in January and anticipated by iOS producers ever since, ZENOLOGY GX for iPad has landed on the App Store. Roland has brought the full ZEN-Core Synthesis System to iPad — the exact same engine that powers flagship hardware like the JUPITER-X and FANTOM EX — rebuilt from the ground up for a touch-based interface. This is not a preset player or a stripped-down port. It’s a fully-featured synthesizer, and Roland is making the entire thing available free with all features unlocked for a limited introductory period. No exaggeration: this is the most significant iOS synth release of 2026.
What’s Under the Hood
Each tone in ZENOLOGY GX is built from up to four partials — four independent synth voices, each with its own complete signal path. Every partial includes an oscillator section with nine virtual analog waveforms, Supersaw, noise, PCM (7,000 waveforms available), and PCM sync. From the oscillator the signal goes into a multi-mode filter with 10 filter types covering Jupiter, Moog, Prophet-5, and other classic modeled designs. Each partial also has three envelopes (pitch, amp, mod) and two LFOs, plus an independent modulation engine. Layer all four partials and you have enormous depth available from a single patch.
The launch library includes over 4,000 presets covering techno, house, classic pop, and film scoring territory — expandable to over 12,000 with Roland Cloud Pro and Ultimate memberships. The effects chain includes over 90 processors: the JUNO-106 and CE-1 choruses, the SDD-320 Dimension D, DJ-FX Looper, and more. The interface is rebuilt for touch, with a high-definition UI and an advanced sound browser. Roland has confirmed that an AUv3 plugin version is in development and will be released during the Free Experience period — until then it’s standalone only.
The Free Experience: What You Get Right Now
Until later in 2026, ZENOLOGY GX is completely free with all features unlocked. Full access to the deep editing tools, all 4,000+ launch presets, no saving restrictions, no trial timeouts. The only requirement is a free Roland Backstage account to activate the app. This gives you an extended period to run the ZEN-Core engine in your real workflow before any purchase decision is required.
What Happens After the Free Period Ends
This is the part to read carefully. Once the introductory period concludes, the free tier degrades to a simplified lite version with a reduced sound library and limited editing. To keep the fully unlocked experience and the complete 12,000+ sound library, you will need either a Roland Cloud Pro or Ultimate membership, or a one-time Lifetime Key purchase. Roland has confirmed the Lifetime Key will be available before the free period ends — pricing hasn’t been announced yet. Given the desktop version’s pricing structure, expect it to sit at a premium tier.

Early User Feedback: The Volume Issue
While the sounds and UI are receiving high praise, it’s worth noting that the launch isn’t entirely flawless. Our quick testing revealed that the app’s audio output is exceptionally quiet. This feedback has also been shared by users on the Loopy Pro forums and other iOS music communities.
Many early adopters are finding they need to push their mixer channels or add gain-staging plugins just to get ZENOLOGY GX to sit at a normal level alongside other iOS synths. It’s frustrating to have such massive, lush patches sound so small out of the gate, but given that this is a V1 release, we expect Roland to address the master output levels in an upcoming patch.
App price: Free (fully unlocked during introductory period — free Roland Backstage account required).
Future pricing: Roland Cloud Pro or Ultimate membership, or Lifetime Key (price TBD before free period ends).
