Audio Damage has pushed the v2.4 update to Dubstation 2, their bucket-brigade delay plugin that has been a reference tool for dub-style processing for well over a decade. The update doesn’t touch the core sound — the BBD modeling, LFO modulation, saturation, and feedback behavior are unchanged — but it addresses several workflow friction points that have accumulated over years of production use, and adds 30 new factory presets. It is a free update for existing owners on both desktop and iOS.
What’s New in v2.4
- Mix Lock: A padlock icon sits to the right of the Mix knob. Engage it and the current wet/dry balance stays fixed when loading presets — a preset switch will no longer push the mix to 100% wet or reset a parallel processing blend you’ve spent time dialing in
- Sync Source Toggle: Switch between Host BPM and a manual Tap mode. When set to Tap, a TAP button appears next to the preset name; tap it three times to set the delay tempo, and the button displays the current running BPM
- MIDI Tap Tempo: Drive the tap-tempo button from a MIDI note or CC. Choose between Note and CC, then set the note or CC number in the new Settings panel — useful for performing tempo changes from a hardware controller mid-session
- New Preset Browser: The old dropdown is replaced with Audio Damage’s shared preset browser, matching the rest of their current plugin line. Supports folder navigation, copy/paste of preset state, import/export of zipped preset folders, and random name generation
- Default Preset: Save any user preset named “Default” and Dubstation 2 will open every new instance with those settings instead of the hardcoded factory state
- 30 New Factory Presets: A fresh set covering the full range of the plugin’s modulation and feedback capabilities
- Fix — Low Cut Restore: Low Cut now restores correctly on project load in every host. The filter cutoff was being overwritten by filter init running after state restoration; the filter now re-applies its parameter value once the host has handed off the sample rate
- Fix — Width Restore: Width now restores correctly from saved presets and tracks automation. The preset loader’s version gate was treating every recent preset as legacy and forcing Width back to 100% on load
Dubstation 2 models the bucket-brigade delay circuit faithfully — frequency response characteristics shift with delay time, which is how the sonic personality of analog BBD hardware actually changes as you increase the delay time rather than staying flat. Dual-mode exposes separate left and right delay time controls alongside a ping-pong mode for cross-feedback effects. The LFO introduces chorusing, doubling, and pitch-sweep modulation by periodically altering delay time. Saturation controls run from subtle warmth to more aggressive clipping. Low-cut and high-cut filters inside the delay path let you shape the feedback character from dark and muffled to bright and spiky. Loop mode turns the plugin into a clean digital looper that applies filter and saturation to the output. Reverse mode flips the current delay buffer contents. In AUM and Logic Pro for iPad it runs as a standard AUv3 effect with full parameter automation and the new shared preset browser syncing across instances.
Core features:
- BBD Circuit Modeling: Frequency-response characteristics vary with delay time — the fundamental sonic character of analog bucket-brigade hardware
- Dual Mode: Independent left and right delay time controls plus ping-pong mode for cross-feedback effects
- LFO Modulation: Periodic delay time modulation producing chorusing, doubling, and pitch sweeps
- Saturation: Analogue-style saturation from subtle coloring to heavy distortion
- Low-Cut and High-Cut Filters: User-controlled cutoff frequencies inside the delay path
- Feedback: From near-zero to full self-oscillating feedback
- Loop Mode: Clean digital looper with filter and saturation applied to output
- Reverse Mode: Reverses the current delay buffer contents
- Gain Staging: Input and output gain controls from -80dB to +3dB
- Cross-Platform Preset Format: XML-based presets shared between iOS and desktop with Handoff support
- AUv3 on iPhone and iPad; also available as VST2, VST3, AU, AAX, CLAP, LV2 on desktop (separate purchase)
App price: $2.99. No in-app purchases.
