The 3.5 update brings a significant workflow enhancement with the new “Sampl” play mode. This feature intelligently splits your samples into multiple zones, allowing you to trigger and manipulate them in creative ways using the newly integrated macros. This follows the major 3.3 update, which finally brought the powerful internal sequencer to the AUv3 version of the app.
New in Version 3.5 & 3.3
- Sampl Mode: Splits samples into zones for granular “chopping” and expressive play.
- AUv3 Sequencer: The full parameter-lock sequencer is now available within hosts like Loopy Pro.
- Macro Integration: Perform complex shifts across multiple parameters simultaneously using the new play mode.
- Bug Fixes: Stability improvements for sequencer length and host sync.
Andrei Nevar has released a major update to Grainheads, pushing the granular sampler into version 3.0 with a complete visual and functional overhaul. The most immediate change is the entirely redesigned user interface, which streamlines the management of its eight independent playheads, with better element hierarchy and scalability, so it’s better to use on an iPhone screen. This update also makes the app visually more appealing, but since the interface is completely rethought, it takes some getting used to from the old slider-based interface. Unfortunately at the moment the UI is very buggy, making control elements overlap, some are not responding… There are also two new play modes, “scan” and “ricochet”, that offer new ways to traverse the granular buffer.
The modulation system receives a significant boost in v3.0. Users can now sum multiple modulation sources to a single target, and the sequencer has been expanded with dedicated modulation lanes for any parameter on the synth. A key workflow improvement is the ability to detach sequencer lanes, allowing for full decoupling of pitch from gate signals. For those seeking grit, a new LO-FI effect has been added to the signal chain, alongside a new Macro system for simplified control over complex parameter groups.
Grainheads remains a versatile AUv3 tool, functioning as both an instrument and an effect module. This dual nature allows you to feed incoming live audio into the buffer for real-time granular processing within hosts like AUM or Logic Pro for iPad. With its deep modulation matrix and polyrhythmic sequencer, v3.0 solidifies Grainheads as a premier choice for ambient textures and experimental glitch rhythms on iPad and macOS.
What’s New in Version 3.0
- Complete UI Redesign: A modernized interface optimized for faster navigation and clearer visualization of playhead movement.
- New Play Modes: Added “scan” and “ricochet” grain playback styles for evolving textures.
- LO-FI Effect: New degradation module added to the re-routable effects chain.
- Expanded Dice Functionality: Intelligent randomization expanded across more synth sections.
- Macro Controls: Four-axis macro system for expressive, multi-parameter gestures.
- Summing Modulation: Multiple modulation sources (LFOs, Envelopes, Sequencer) can now be summed to a single parameter.
- Sequencer Enhancements: Modulation lanes for all parameters and the ability to detach lanes for independent pitch/gate control.
GrainHeads is a flexible granular sampler built around eight independent grain heads that play back samples loaded in four sample slots or process incoming audio. Each head offers its own set of controls for position, grain size, direction, envelope, chance, scatter, pan, and a multi-mode filter (low-pass, band-pass, high-pass). Every parameter can be modulated by one or more of the modulation sources. Modulation section consists of 8 LFOs and 2 envelopes. A built-in polyrhythmic step sequencer allows per-step programming of any parameter for each grain head. You can detach sequencer lanes, allowing for full independent sequencing of pitch from gate signals The final output is processed through three types of noise (white, vinyl, or waves), add delay and reverb, LO-FI effect and tame it all with a Limiter — all fully modulatable. A dedicated macros scree turns the screen into an dual expressive XY touch pad for real-time performance of selected parameters.
The free version includes is limited to built-in samples and limited XY Play mode parameters. The full Pro version unlocks everything for a one-time in-app purchase. GrainHeads is a universal app that runs natively on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, making it convenient for creators who move between devices.
