discoDSP launched Retromulator for iOS, a multi-core emulation app and AUv3 plugin that runs the actual ROM firmware, physical models, or sample data of iconic hardware synthesizers. Rather than mathematically approximating the sound, it executes the original firmware directly — which produces the authentic character of the Access Virus A/B/C, Clavia Nord Lead 2X, Roland JP-8000, and Waldorf Microwave XT. FM synthesis is covered through cycle-accurate recreations of the Yamaha DX7 and OPL3 chips. The emulation cores are based on open source work by The Usual Suspects, whose desktop versions offer full editing rather than just playback — those are not currently available on iPad.
Here’s the practical constraint: App Store policies prohibit Just-In-Time code generation, so Retromulator’s DSP cores run in interpreter mode rather than compiled JIT. That demands significant processing power. You need an A14 chip or newer, higher audio buffer sizes, and some tolerance for reduced polyphony and limited multitimbral use compared to the desktop version. On supported devices the CPU load is noticeable but manageable — it is the cost of running actual hardware firmware rather than an approximation. You also need to supply your own legally obtained ROM files to access the emulations; the app does not include them. In Cubasis and AUM, Retromulator inserts as a standard AUv3 instrument. Deep GUI-based patch editing is not available on the mobile version, but preset browsing and performance controls work on the standard iOS interface.
Key features:
- Cycle-Accurate Emulation: Runs actual firmware of the Access Virus A/B/C, Nord Lead 2X, Roland JP-8000, and Waldorf Microwave XT
- FM Synthesis Cores: Component-level recreations of the Yamaha DX7 and Nuked OPL3 chips
- Universal: Standalone and AUv3 on iPad, iPhone, and Apple Silicon Macs
- Bring Your Own ROMs: Requires user-supplied original hardware firmware files
- Interpreter Mode DSP: Requires A14/M1 or newer — higher buffer sizes recommended for stable performance
App price: $4.99. No in-app purchases.
