Bit Crusher by Daniel McKemie

Daniel McKemie (Callback Audio) has officially launched Bit Crusher, a dedicated dual-stage AUv3 lo-fi effect for iOS. Priced at $1.99, it combines authentic bit depth quantization and sample rate decimation to perfectly replicate the gritty sonic signatures of early digital samplers, legacy 8-bit video game consoles, and vintage studio AD/DA converters.

Unlike generalized clipping algorithms, McKemie’s Bit Crusher utilizes a two-part serial processing chain to recreate the exact physical constraints of early hardware digital design. The incoming continuous audio voltage is first subjected to a reduction in its digital resolution block. By stepping down the active bit depth, the plugin limits the number of mathematical values available to define signal amplitude. This introduces quantization noise—a harsh, aggressive form of harmonic distortion that strips away modern hi-fi fidelity and adds weighted grit to transients.

Forcing the dial from 8-bit down to extreme 2-bit spaces yields highly responsive, distorted textures perfect for industrial synth lines or aggressive drum loops. Once the amplitude has been crushed, the audio feeds into an independent time-domain resampling processor driven by a sample-and-hold circuit. By dropping the sample frequency below the required capture speed for incoming audio, it explicitly breaches the Nyquist boundary. High frequencies fold backward across the spectrum, re-emerging as unharmonic, bright, and distinctly metallic aliasing artifacts.

Early users on the Loopy Pro forums are praising it as an accessible, low-overhead bitcrushing solution to add some vintage crunch or chiptune dirt to their mobile tracking rigs, highlighting its precise analytical mangling capabilities. Operating as a standalone app or native AUv3 plugin, Bit Crusher slots seamlessly into mobile production systems without breaking active sessions. It is fully compatible with popular iOS hosting frameworks, including Logic Pro for iPad, Loopy Pro, and AUM.

Key Features:

  • Dual-Stage Processing: Independent amplitude quantization and time-domain decimation for authentic vintage grit.
  • Bit Depth Quantization: Precise control to reduce digital resolution down to 2-bit spaces for aggressive harmonic distortion.
  • Sample Rate Decimation: Sample-and-hold resampling to generate classic unharmonic foldback aliasing artifacts.
  • Full State Saving: Bit depth states, decimation factors, and mix positions are seamlessly saved and reloaded by your host DAW project file.
  • Low-Overhead Engineering: Extremely lightweight (~7.8 MB footprint), allowing multiple concurrent instances across separate tracks without taxing your hardware CPU.
  • Universal Binary: Fully optimized layouts for both iPhone and iPad running iOS/iPadOS 17.0 or later.
  • AUv3 and Standalone: Load it directly into your favorite AUv3-compatible host or run it standalone.

App price: $1.99. No in-app purchases.
