The App Store description is unusually direct: “Vagabond is an idiosyncratic wavetable synthesiser.” The word “idiosyncratic” is not marketing language in this context; it is a warning and an invitation at the same time, depending on what you are looking for. Caldwell’s existing apps do not try to be everything to everyone, and Vagabond does not either. The first App Store review calls it “a drone wizard” and praises how immediate the controls are. At 3.7MB and entirely free with no in-app purchases, no subscriptions, and no analytics, this is a tool built from personal interest rather than commercial calculation — which, in practice, often means it does one thing particularly well and makes few concessions to the average case.
The synthesis architecture layers four unison oscillators per voice plus a sub-oscillator, running 16-voice polyphony across the full build. Four unison voices tuned against each other is a significant amount of thickness and stereo spread before you add modulation or effects — the kind of density that naturally gravitates toward pads, drones, and sustained timbres rather than punchy leads or percussive material. That first-day community characterization of “drone wizard” is plausible given the spec. The filter is described as switchable without specifying between which modes, the modulation is “a bit of,” and the effects are “some” — Caldwell’s notation of these sections is deliberately casual, and the underlying message is that the character comes from the oscillator stack rather than from complex modulation routing or deep effects processing. What it lacks in parameter depth it may compensate for in immediacy: a synth with four detuned unison voices and a sub that you can open and start playing without reading a manual has a specific value in a mobile context, especially in AUM sessions where you want to drop a pad sound in quickly without configuring a more complex instrument.
Tucked into the package is a second plugin that has nothing to do with the wavetable engine: Twelve, a generative AUv3 MIDI processor that creates 12-bar blues sequences. Caldwell describes it as “a one trick pony” and notes it was included for demo purposes, but makes clear you can load it independently in any AUv3 MIDI host. A 12-bar blues generator as a bonus plugin in a free wavetable synth is an eccentric combination that somehow makes complete sense given the developer’s catalog — this is someone who builds things because he finds them interesting, not because a market research survey indicated demand. Loopy Pro, which supports AUv3 MIDI processors, would be the natural place to load Twelve if you want to drive Vagabond or any other instrument with its blues patterns automatically.
Vagabond loads as an AUv3 instrument in GarageBand, AUM, Loopy Pro, and Cubasis, and runs standalone on both iPhone and iPad. iOS 15.0 is the minimum — compatible back to A12 Bionic-era devices, so nothing recent is excluded. The developer’s closing line in the App Store description — “We don’t want your money and we don’t want your data” — is a consistent principle across Caldwell’s catalog rather than a marketing angle. Whether Vagabond’s particular flavor of idiosyncrasy fits your sound palette is the only real question; the price and the privacy stance answer themselves.
