Developer Ryo Togawa (RT Music Software) has announced the release of VAPolyFMWest, an innovative hybrid polyphonic synthesizer for iOS and iPadOS. Designed to bridge two historically distinct synthesis architectures, the engine channels the digital logic of 1980s Frequency Modulation (FM) directly into the harmonically rich, additive wave-shaping environments of West Coast synthesis layouts.
The foundation of VAPolyFMWest relies on a flexible 4-operator, 8-waveform digital core running across 8 classic routing algorithms. Moving far beyond the basic sine waves of early digital synthesis, the app integrates multiple operator waveforms reminiscent of iconic late-80s rackmount units like the Yamaha TX81Z or DX11. This deep digital layer provides an expansive foundational canvas of glassy electric pianos, complex sci-fi soundscapes, and metallic digital basses before any external processing even begins.
Once the digital FM core generates a sound, it feeds immediately into a serial West Coast processing chain. First, a dedicated Wavefolder module amplifies signals past a defined threshold, folding the peaks back downward to inject raw odd and even harmonics rather than letting the audio clip. From there, the signal is shaped by an integrated Lowpass Gate (LPG). Modeling classic analog vactrol circuit physics, the LPG controls both frequency cutoff and amplitude simultaneously, imparting a uniquely organic, acoustic-sounding “pluck” and highly musical ring-out to percussive and melodic patches alike.
VAPolyFMWest is highly optimized for modern mobile workflows, running as a universal standalone application and a native AUv3 instrument plugin. This ensures seamless multi-instance integration and robust performance inside popular iOS hosts and sequencers such as Logic Pro, AUM, and Loopy Pro.
App Price: Available at an introductory price of $5.99 until June 30, 2026, after which it will return to its standard retail price of $14.99.
