SwarmaDie 2 by Diego Capoccitti

Independent developer Diego Capoccitti has officially released SwarmaDie 2, a unique polyphonic software emulation heavily inspired by the famous Swarmatron analog instrument (originally designed in 2011 by Brian and Leon Dewan). Available as both a standalone application and a universal AUv3 plug-in for iPhone, iPad, and Apple Vision Pro, this second iteration significantly expands the sonic horizons of its predecessor. It offers an expressive platform tailored for creating evolving acoustic textures, massive drones, and psychoacoustic “swarm” effects.

At the core of SwarmaDie 2โ€™s synthesis architecture is a uniquely controlled array of 8 independent oscillators. The defining feature lies in its combined pitch control: moving from left to right across the interface, the “swarm” control progressively separates the eight oscillators across an equally distributed harmonic space, transitioning from a perfect unison (on the left) to a perfect fifth spread across the entire frequency spectrum (on the right). The signal is then routed into a 24 dB per octave transistor ladder filterโ€”a topology made famous by classic Moog synthesizers, renowned for its warm, thick characterโ€”complete with dynamic tracking, resonance control, and a dedicated drive stage. For shaping amplitude over time, the instrument provides full ADSR envelope controls.

From a physical interaction standpoint, the application relies on two parallel multi-touch ribbon controllers that can be played simultaneously on a mobile screen: one dedicated to adjusting the fundamental Pitch and the other focused on commanding the behavior of the Swarm. With the recent update targeting version 2.0.1, Capoccitti has refined the workflow by integrating a comprehensive MIDI Learn function (allowing users to map any external hardware CC to the app’s parameters), manual numerical value entry via double-tapping knobs, and a real-time information bubble that follows finger movements to display values in actual units of measure (dB, %, Hz, seconds, etc.).

When integrated into a modular host or mobile DAW like AUM or Loopy Pro, SwarmaDie 2 excels at generating cinematic soundscapes and organic microtonal beds that remain in constant motion. However, the very nature of this pitch-cluster synthesis can make tuning management complex within traditional or pop arrangements where absolute chromatic precision is required. Additionally, the experimental touch interface demands a slight initial learning curve to properly calibrate the response and spectral separation of individual oscillators without causing an excessive buildup of muddy low-mid frequencies.

Key Features:

  • Swarmatron-Inspired Synthesis: An 8-oscillator array designed to emulate the organic, drifting cluster-pitch mechanics of rare analog swarm synthesizers.
  • 24 dB/Oct Transistor Ladder Filter: A Moog-style resonant filter model that infuses tracks with analog warmth, saturation, and smooth cutoff responses.
  • Dual Multi-touch Ribbon Controllers: Parallel ribbon control surfaces to manipulate fundamental note height (Pitch) and harmonic interval width (Swarm) simultaneously.
  • Integrated MIDI Learn Functionality: Allows rapid assignment of external hardware controllers via MIDI CC messages for tactile live performances.
  • Accurate Value Controls: Supports manual data input via an on-screen keyboard and introduces dynamic feedback bubbles expressed in real-world measurements (Hz, dB, seconds).
  • Standalone and AUv3 Formats: Universal system compatibility to function in isolation or as an inline plug-in instrument inside major iOS and iPadOS hosts.

App price: $4.99 / โ‚ฌ5,99. No in-app purchases.
