Developer Ryo Togawa (RT Music Software) has released VAPolyFMWest, an innovative polyphonic synthesizer for iOS and macOS. This unique AUv3 plugin bridges two historically distinct synthesis philosophies: the precise, digital architecture of 1980s Frequency Modulation (FM) and the organic, harmonically additive wave-shaping of West Coast synthesis.
Traditionally, FM synthesis relies on linear operators modulating each other to build bright, metallic, or bell-like timbres. Conversely, West Coast synthesis (inspired by Don Buchla) utilizes simpler raw waveforms and coaxes complex textures out of them using wave-folding circuits and lowpass gates. VAPolyFMWest stacks these modules in series, allowing users to feed highly complex digital FM arrangements directly into analog-style acoustic shaping processors. The foundation of the synthesizer is a polyphonic 4-operator, 8-waveform, 8-algorithm FM engine heavily reminiscent of iconic late-80s rackmount units like the Yamaha TX81Z.
Once the digital FM core generates a sound, it is routed immediately into a West Coast processing environment. The Wavefolder amplifies the signal past a threshold and folds the peaks back downward, injecting complex odd and even harmonics into the FM patches. This is followed by a Lowpass Gate (LPG) which replaces the standard separate Filter and VCA architecture. The resulting instrument proves incredibly engaging in practice. The crisp, glassy nature of digital FM is beautifully counterbalanced by the dirty, tactile growl of the wavefolder. Furthermore, the inclusion of a vactrol-modeled Lowpass Gate provides a distinct woody, percussive decay that standard VCA envelopes simply cannot replicate.
Running as a native AUv3 plugin, VAPolyFMWest integrates perfectly into modular environments like AUM. It also serves as a capable standalone app, featuring a built-in 3-channel analog-style step sequencer, Ableton Link support, and comprehensive MIDI 2.0 implementation. If you enjoyed the developer’s previous work on recently released VAPolyMk5, this West Coast deviation is a must-have expansion for your sonic palette.
